“The Annex” Natural Dye Garden

Since Spring 2019, the farm’s quarter-acre plot of land affectionately referred to as “The Annex” has been home to a vibrant initiative and community tending to a natural dye garden. In addition to plants traditionally used to produce dye such as indigo, amaranth, yarrow, marigolds, sunflowers and others, the garden is also home to plants native to this region, plants that can be used to create fibers like cotton, hemp and flax, and a range of other medicinal herbs, flowers and wild variants. You can read more about the garden’s accompanying studio, Blue Light Junction, and ongoing projects via its main website, https://www.bluelightjunction.com/dye-garden. You can also read more about the founding Dye Garden Initiative, which came to a close in Fall 2020 but will continue to unfold and grow through community efforts, and the philosophies behind the garden through MICA’s announcement of the initiative. Please get in touch with Kenya Miles or Rosa Chang if you are interested to participate in the dye garden’s future activities.
